School Field Trip Programs
The Field Trip Program is a social studies lesson designed to provide a "hands on" experience for students to learn about local history. The program is targeted at third graders and covers several standards identified in the California third grade curriculum. However, it may also be appropriate for 1st grade and 4th and 5th grade students.
The field trip will include a tour of the San Dieguito Heritage Museum. Students will be led by a guide through exhibits interpreting the history of the Native American, Rancho, Pioneer and Twentieth Centrury periods of change in the San Dieguito communities.
Students will also tour an outside Native American grass hut and grinding stone exhibit. A Native American storytelling and a sand painting activity will be conducted in this exhibit.
Students will also participate in early settler activities. The class will choose two of the three activity choices, which are making butter, making a homestead shanty model and bartering in the general store.
A resource guide for teachers to use prior to participating in the field trip is available to print (see print brochure link below) or can be obtained at the museum. The guide will serve as an introduction to the history that will be covered on the field trip and will assist the teacher in preparing the class by providing history information and activities that may be used in the classroom or assigned as homework activities.
Teachers must register with the museum to book a field trip visit. You can register by submitting a form on-line (see registration form link below).
The cost for the program is $4.00 per student and is limited to 40 students. A deposit of $20 is required at the time a reservation is made. The field trips are offered on Wednesday and Thursday mornings during the school year, from 9:30am to 11:30am.
