About Us

Our History

The San Dieguito Heritage Museum was founded in 1988 to preserve the artifacts, photographs, records, and stories of our local history before they were lost to the passage of time. The Museum’s founders had deep roots in the surrounding communities and shared a passion for preserving the unique heritage of the San Dieguito region. They envisioned a place where history could be experienced through both traditional exhibits and hands-on learning.

The San Dieguito region includes the communities of Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas (Leucadia, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and Olivenhain), and Rancho Santa Fe—roughly the area between Batiquitos Lagoon and Los Peñasquitos Lagoon.

A significant milestone in the Museum’s history came in 2007, when, through the generosity of the City of Encinitas, the Museum moved to its permanent home at The Heritage Ranch on Quail Gardens Drive. This beautiful 1.5-acre property provided the opportunity to expand the Museum’s vision and create a living-history campus where visitors can experience the region’s past in an immersive setting.

Today, the campus spans the history of the region from Native American times through the 1960s and includes the Main Museum, Native American Ki’icha (E’waa), 1885 Teten House, General Store, Ecke Ranch Bunk House, and the Main Street Building. Together, these historic buildings help preserve and share the stories that have shaped our community for generations.

Our Mission

The mission of the San Dieguito Heritage Museum is to collect, preserve and interpret local history and to share the story of the communities of the San Dieguito region to children and adults in ways that are authentic and exciting.  The Museum recognizes and respects the cultural diversity of the community we serve—past, present and future. We strive to offer a balanced interpretation of history of the diverse people of San Diego and our common humanity.
